History of Fencing
Swordfighting as sport has existed since ancient Egypt, and has been practiced in many forms in various cultures since then. Although jousting and tournament combat was a popular sport in the European middle ages, modern FIE fencing owes more to unarmoured dueling forms that evolved from 16th century rapier combat. Rapiers evolved from cut-and-thrust military swords, but were most popular amongst civilians who used it for self-defence and dueling. Rapiers were edged, but the primary means of attack was the thrust. Rapier fencing spread from Spain and Italy to northwest Europe, in spite of the objections of masters such as George Silver who preferred traditional cutting weapons such the English broad...
How to move in fencing
As we discussed in the previous lessons, the fencing stance is intregal to the success of the fencer. Placing the body in the best compromise between comfort and effectiveness is essential for minimizing the target area while allowing for freedom to advance and retreat. It is the advance and retreat, which we are going to discuss today. Movement up and down the strip is what controls the bout. We talked in the last lesson about fencing distance. Fencing distance is the optimal distance a fencer attempts to maintain from his/her opponent, where they are close enough to launch a successful attack, and yet far enough away to defend or outdistance an opposing attack. This distance usually falls around...
Basic defense tips
Today we expound upon the basic concepts of the defense. As mentioned in earlier lessons, there are three areas to defense. The parry, the displacement of target and the counter attack. All three work together to form a sound defense, however we must examine each independently. The parry is the act of using the blade to deflect an opponents attack. Pretty simply concept, however your opponent is doing everything to bypass your parry and land the point. A good parry requires preparation, alertness, speed and form. If any one is lacking, the parry will fail. As we recall, there are 9, and often more depending on style, parries from which to choose. Different parries serve different functions depending...
Foil fencing
Here follows a brief treatise on some selected concepts and terms having to do with foil fencing. It is not an exhaustive work. I have used it as a handout for my University of Wisconsin foil classes. I place the following text in the public domain: Beginning Foil Fencing: Concepts and Terms Lines -- according to the French system of fencing, space above your bell guard is high line; space below is low line. For right-handers, the space to the right of their bell guard is outside line; space to the left of the guard is inside line. Thus we have four quadrants known as lines: high-outside, high-inside, low-outside, and low-inside. As the fencer's bell guard moves around, his target surfaces they may...
Cross-training
Judging from the inquiries I've received about it recently, "cross-training" seems the hot topic at the moment. All kinds of athletes are praising the virtues of engaging in some activity other than their specialty in order to complement or enhance their principle sport. Usually, the cross-training activity has some specific transfer value, that is, it develops the same muscles or uses the same or similar movements as the cross-trainer's principle sport. This is nothing new. Conditioning programs of all kinds are based on this idea. That's why boxers do roadwork and athletes of all kinds lift weights. First, cross-training is irrelevant to the beginner. Beginners should concentrate on fencing itself...
Fencing equipment
Foil In both its modern and its classical guise, fencing consists of three different weapons: foil, épée and sabre. These three weapons had become standard by the late nineteenth century and all are represented at Olympic-level competition. Additionally, in classical academies, one will often find historical fencing weapons, such as canne, bâton, main-gauche or rapier and dagger, being taught. Foil used to be the first weapon taught to beginners, because the techniques of foil teach, in abstract form, the fundamentals of fencing. Additionally, in the past, women were only allowed to fence foil, and the lightness of the weapon made it easier to handle for children. Today, while it is still...
Practice of Fencing
The following description pertains to the practice of modern competitive fencing, as governed by the FIE and does not cover the many variations such as fencing within a circle popular with SCA enthusiasts. The fencing piste A fencing bout takes place on a strip, or piste, which, according to the current FIE regulations, should be between 1.5 and 2 meters wide and 14 meters long. Two meteres either side of the mid-point, there are two the en-garde lines , where the fencers stand at the beginning of the bout. There are also two warning lines two metres from either end of the strip, to let a retreating fencer know that he is nearly out of space. Any fencer who retreats off the end of the piste...
Classical fencing
Classical fencing, often abbreviated as "CF", is a way to distinguish one branch of traditional fencing from modern "sport" or Olympic fencing. It is described by the International Masters at Arms Federation (IMAF): "The second half of the 19th Century is historically the classical period, in which the art of fencing reached its furthest development, but we may include the whole of the 19th century in this era, as this was the age when fencing was formally codified, systematized, and fully expressed in complete systems and styles. 'Classical,' in this sense, means 'the golden age,' the period when the art saw its highest peak." We get a sense of the 'ideal' Classical fencer from 19th Century...
Fencing sabre
The sabre (or saber) is one of the three weapons of modern sport fencing. The sabre differs from both épée and foil in that it is possible to score with the edge of the blade. In the other two weapons, valid touches are only scored using the point of the blade. Like foil, sabre uses the convention of right-of-way to determine priority. Sabre was the last weapon in fencing to make the transition over to using electrical equipment. This occurred in 1988, 31 years after Foil and 52 years after Épée. The target area originates from dueling sabre training. To attack the opponent's leg would allow him to "slip" that leg back and attack one's exposed arm or head given that the higher line...
Footwork in fencing
In a fencing bout, a great deal depends on being in the right place at the right time. Fencers are constantly manoeuvring in and out of each other's range, accelerating, decelerating, changing directions and so on. All this has to be done with minimum effort and maximum grace, which makes footwork arguably the most important aspect of a fencer's training regime. In fact, in the first half of the 20th century it was common practice to put fencers through six months to a year of footwork before they were ever allowed to hold a sword. (For better or for worse, this practice has now been largely abandoned.) Modern fencing tends to be quite linear. To some extent this may be dictated by the...
Learn the Lunge - one of the basics attacks in fencing
The lunge is one of the axioms of the attack, and one of the most vital to perfect. The lunge is the basic technique used to extend an attack quickly and effectively, while still maintaining the ability to control a retreat (in the instance of failure.) The attacking portion of the lunge is relatively simple, in-and-of itself. However, the attacking portion sets the stage for the recovery, which is the difficult portion. The lunge is intended to quickly extend the reach of a fencer by thrusting the entire body forward to close the distance between fencers. We have discussed that the basic attack is the extension of the arm until straight. This is effective, yet relatively easy to foil. Simply stay...

Cost Segregation Gives Apartment Owners Tax Relief
Apartment owners can face staggering expenses to maintain apartment communities. The upkeep of even a modest community could involve groundskeeping, unit renovation, and replacements, such as parking lot asphalt and fencing. Another steep expense is federal income tax - and in some areas an additional state tax on income - but through an innovative study known as cost segregation, the depreciation of property components can be used to help lower federal taxes.Today, more apartment investors, especially those whose occupancy rates are challenged by the nation's single-family housing, are taking a close look at every possible avenue to lower costs. That's a frustrating task in the apartment business...

The Long Way Around
Sometimes it seems that civilization has arrived too soon. Time saving devices often don't and quick fix solutions frequently aren't. The US Government spent hundreds of thousands of dollars developing a pen that would write in space. The Russians used a pencil. Recently I bought a fancy leaf blower/vacuum for the patio. Soon my hands smelled like gasoline, I no longer can fit my car in the garage and the cat has a permanent noise hang-up. So I sold it to my neighbor for $50.00 (Orig. $300.) and bought a broom. It works fine. The indoor vacuum came with a hard floor attachment that requires an MIT engineer to hook up. Swirls of foam spewed forth like a Niagara, mixing with the...

Electric Fences Insure Pet Safety
There are two types of fences that will keep a pet in your yard: a high frequency fence and an electric fence. Both fences are effective at keeping animals from roaming, and will not hurt the animal.
