Hitting the target is one of the essential tasks for a fencer. This means that accuracy training is an important part of any fencer's development as an athlete. Unfortunately accuracy comes with practice - lots of practice. Experience in the martial arts suggests that 10,000 or more repetitions of a skill are needed to develop mastery. As you can imagine, your fencing master and your fellow fencers really get bored being a target to get to those sorts of numbers. This means that a training aid that is simple, inexpensive, and portable is worth exploring. There are a variety of sophisticated target trainers available--the Target Speed is an excellent example and the various flexible arm[..]

Not all fencers are equally talented, technically or tactically. If they were, running competitions would be absurdly easy. Any fencer could be assigned to any pool or to any position on an elimination table, and the organizers could still be assured of the fencer winning who was best of the identical athletes. But reality does not work that way. As a result, there has to be some method of dividing fencers so that the outcome reflects the skill level present - enter seeding. The objective of seeding is that the bouts result in the best fencer winning the competition, the better fencers surviving further into the competition (the rounds of 16, 8, and 4 of an elimination table), and the[..]

Bruce Lee did more than blaze the movie screens with powerful, lightning quick punches and kicks. He launched a martial arts revolution and encouraged martial artists to break the ties that bound them as practitioners. Lee freed himself and other martial artists from the ties that limited the skills traditional fighters. He envisioned unity among the divided disciplines of martial arts. After years of research and development, Lee managed to fuse every helpful martial arts components into one system. He incorporated western boxing, the Chinese style of Kung Fu called Wing Chun, and Western fencing and added bits of Karate, Judo, Aikido, Muay Thai, and Jiu Jitsu. The result was a concept[..]

Owning horses can be very rewarding. However, some people think taking care of these gentle giants is easy. Although there are some who are already masters in this field, there are others who only know about the basics of equine care. From good food, to proper shelter, to the proper horse tack supply products, the list for necessities seems endless. Horses do need the right stable supplies in order for them to be healthy, safe and comfortable. With so many tack supply and equipment choices these days, you might get confused as to what to consider first. In any situation, saddle blankets are one of the most important. Aside from keeping the horses warm, they can also protect them from[..]

After putting countless hours and dollars into a garden, it is devastating to see little pests ruin all of your hard work. The good news is that there are many ways to keep the critters out of your garden. Here are ten quick and easy tips to discourage pests from encroaching in your territory. 1. Eliminate the standing water. Stagnant water encourages the breeding of insects. If insects are suddenly on the attack, look around for any collection of water nearby. 2. Control the clutter in your garden. If there are piles of debris lying around, it provides hiding places and homes for unwanted creatures. Clear away the rubble to discourage pests from making a home in your garden. 3. An[..]

Time - Fencing Tactics

Fencing bouts pose a distinct set of tactical problems related to the time remaining in the bout. If you do not understand the situation and act accordingly, you risk losing when victory was possible. Some guidelines: (1) Always know what the score is. Normally this is announced after each touch, but even then some fencers become confused. If you are not sure what the referee just said ask politely who had which number of hits. (2) Have a sense of the time remaining. The referee or timekeeper normally will not announce the time. But you may always ask for the time remaining when a halt is called. (3) If you are ahead and less than one minute remains, make your choices based on the[..]

Like many fencers, I approach any mention of "fencing!" in a game or movie with trepidation. I'm mainly looking at how "they" are going to screw things up and totally misrepresent fencing as a sport. One of the most featured games in pre-launch was the "fencing" game in Wii Sport Resort. I saw the videos from E3 and the promotional stuff and just had to try it. After my really bad experience with Clone Wars: Jedi Duals, the bar was set pretty low. The Asian influence is apparent in the game. The Wii menu calls the game "swordfighting" and not "fencing". Score +1 (for not trying to call it something it's not.) When you set up for the game, you're put on a circular platform above the water[..]

Thrilling battles between swordsmen do not always happen in swashbuckling pirate movies! The sport of fencing provides all of the thrills of sword fighting-without the outcome being a matter of life or death. Historical evidence reveals that sword battles have existed since ancient times. By the 1300s, the everyday life of European gentlemen had begun to include swordplay. Within time, secret fencing moves became standards in the sport. By the 1600s, several principles and rules existed for fencing competitions. Fencing became an Olympic sport in 1896, when the international competition added an event for the foil. The foil is the most common weapon used in fencing competitions and[..]

Basic Judging For Dry Fencing

fencing competitions

The dry (not using electronic scoring) fencing competition bout depends on the quality of the judges and director. Bad judges and directors lead to bad fencing, pure and simple. That means that, if your fencing club is going to hold dry fencing competitions, you must train your members to be good judges. The skill set is deceptively simple. You see a hit; you raise your hand. But there is so much more. First, judges have to be honest and unbiased. You see hits and misses; you do not see team mates or opponents. Dishonest judging and shading what you see to benefit one fencer or the other is corrupt cheating, and ultimately destroys the quality of the fencing. Second, every possible hit[..]

people spend a lot of time on updating and maintaining their home. They spend time and money on the windows and doors and roof. But when it comes to the boundary of the property, they often forget about the fence. Or give little thought to the type of fence that would best suit their property. This should be avoided. After all, a fence is the thing that sets the house from the surrounding area and so is one of the most important things in the garden. The fence is the thing that shows the world where your property begins, and what is private With this in mind, many people look upon fencing purely as a security measure. The fence is seen as a means to keep people out, to keep the home and[..]
